This morning I woke up early and went into the kitchen to make my morning coffee, only to discover that I had run out of beans. I was horrified. As a Serious Literary Author, I am unable to write without having consumed at least one strong black coffee. The situation worsened when I looked at the clock and realised the Independent Organic Fairtrade Wholefood Deli where I always buy my beans was not due to open for another three hours. The only shop open at such an early hour was my local Sainsbury’s supermarket. I suddenly found myself faced with an impossible dilemma. Should I wait three hours for the deli to open, or go straight to Sainsbury’s? Both options were intolerable. As a Serious Literary Author, any moment when I am not writing is physically painful for me. The idea of going three hours without putting pen to paper was simply appalling. But going to Sainsbury’s meant buying supermarket beans, which would be an insult to my AeroPress. As the clock kept tickin…
