‘I don’t want to start a podcast or TikTok’
Dear Daniel,
My agent says that if I want to be a successful writer, I need to have a podcast and be on TikTok. I don’t know much about either – I don’t listen to podcasts and have never used TikTok. As a brilliant and prolific writer, I wondered if you could share your two cents on them both?

Before I address your question, I wish to make it clear from the off that I do not believe in any activity or entertainment other than writing. All forms of media – be it the internet, cinema, television or radio – are distractions that writers should try to avoid. Even books are a trap; time spent reading is time that could be spent writing.1 However, as a modern man, I am aware that such temptations are simply a fact of life in 2023. So, since you have asked, I shall attempt to give my two pence.
I am not a fan of podcasts. I have never listened to one, but I do not like them. My problem with podcasts is that I am yet to meet a person who does not have an idea for one. These days it i…
